Zena, Deer and Groundhogs - OH MY!

Corn should be ready in about 20 days

Damage to Squash plants from the groundhog

Solution to ground hog problem - electric wire!

Well, the good news is that after 3 days in solitary confinement, Zena is back to being the Warrior Chicken. She is on alert for invaders and will hopefully being laying eggs again soon. If anyone else gets it in their little chicken head to go broody, in the cage they go right away.

We've been enjoying watching the deer most days in the morning and evening. They are only eating the tree leaves so I'm in no hurry to chase them off.

We do have a problem with a pesky groundhog who has been very crafty about digging under our fence to eat the leaves on the squash, watermelon and pumpkin plants. Glen has been out every evening reinforcing the bottom of the fence but he still gets in. We finally resorted to electric fence wire, just a little shock to scare him off. This was working very well, but since we turn it off when the chickens go out (don't want fried chicken - that was bad I know), the groundhog learned when he could invade. Now Glen has put up more fencing to keep the chickens away from the elec wire so we can leave it on. This is working, no groundhog, no fried chicken.

Of course the deer that came out last night were not very happy about the fence, I guess they wanted to get to the wild berries on the other side of the fence. It's hard trying to keep all of the animals happy.

The garden is growing like crazy. We are picking almost every day and look forward to squash, beets and green beans within the next week. I am getting ready to do a second planting of green beans, spinach, more corn if I can find a place and I'm also going to add carrots.

Stuff

Deer Raider

Madison's New Outfit

Glen and Nathan's new Jammies

Well, I haven't posted sewing projects for a while and I do have some new things. Of course Madison has a new outfit, Glen & Nathan have new jammie pants, I have some yoga pants and there is a dress I'm working on that's not quite finished.

The vege garden is bigger every day and this morning I picked two ripe cherry tomatoes! That was a complete surprise and I will enjoy eating them. I also picked some banana peppers to throw in a salad for dinner. We have a deer who has become a new visitor to the place. At first I thought she was only eating the tree leaves, but now I've noticed some munched bean leaves. We will have to work on the problem this weekend, maybe a second row of fencing along that side. Next year we will have a better plan. The dogs barely bark when the deer comes so there is really nothing to scare her away so we will have to be creative.

On the chicken front, it seems one of the hens has gone broody. This would be perfect if she was sitting on eggs to hatch but that is not the case. There are was to fix this problem so I guess we will work on that this weekend too. My biggest worry is that she won't even get up to eat or drink. This is our first "chicken" problem since we got them so I'm not complaining!
